True Life: I use a ParaGard IUD

Curious about this copper IUD?  Listen to Christina as she shares her personal experience about the ParaGard IUD

Just a quickie: ParaGard is an intrauterine device (IUD) that is placed into your uterus for long-term birth control (contraception).

This T-shaped plastic frame is wrapped with copper wire coils that continuously release copper to bathe the lining of the uterus.

It produces an inflammatory reaction that is toxic to sperm!  If fertilization does occur, ParaGard keeps the fertilized egg from implanting in the lining of the uterus.

100% hormone free and doesn't alter your periods.

  1. Hi. Very informative video, thanks for posting. I do have one question remaining that was not addressed in the video. I am a man, and I would like to know if I will feel the IUD while having intercourse with my partner?

  2. Great question! Another myth is that male partners will be bothered by the IUD during sex. The IUD is placed inside the uterus and plastic strings, which are attached to the end, poke outside the cervix and into the vagina. The strings are cut pretty long, which may tuck up behind the cervix. So they are pretty much out of the way during sexual intercourse. The strings are very soft and shouldn’t bother both parties involved. If you or your partner are experiencing pain or discomfort during sex, then a visit to your healthcare provider is necessary to make sure the IUD is properly placed or the strings need to be adjusted.

  3. If you are trying to get pregnant, how soon after the IUD is removed will you ovulate?

    1. Hi KA,

Since inhibition of ovulation is not the primary mechanism of IUD contraception (though it may occur with Mirena/Skyla), return to ovulation usually happens sooner than with the pill. In research studies, more than half of women became pregnant within three months of IUD removal (as compared to ~40% after discontinuation of the pill). Hope this helped!
